MADISON, WI – Today, Sen. Chris Larson and Democratic colleagues commemorated the 44th anniversary of Roe v. Wade, the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion nationwide, by announcing an Abortion is Health Care Resolution.

The Abortion is Health Care Resolution reads as follows;

“Republican leaders must stop their political intrusion and need to trust women to make their own health care decisions. We can’t ignore science and return to back alley abortions and jailing women. Abortion should be made affordable and accessible for all women, regardless of state, county, or zip code. Relying on scientific evidence, legislators should recognize that abortion is an essential aspect of ensuring a woman’s overall health: physically, psychologically, and socioeconomically. Because of these shared values, we introduced the Abortion is Health Care Resolution (LRB 1443) and hope to see support from any lawmaker who is committed to fostering healthy Wisconsin communities.

chris-larson“In 1973, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that it is a woman’s constitutional right to have an abortion. Today, we celebrate the legacy of this decision and the positive impact it has had on women’s health outcomes.

“We stand with the majority of our neighbors against political extremism, as shown by the millions of women and families who declared their support for women’s health care by joining marches across the country and world this past weekend. The consistent message from across the nation was that they will no longer be silent as their rights are eroded. Further, according to polling conducted by the Public Leadership Institute, voters support a wide range of proactive policies to protect abortion rights. Nationwide 70 percent of voters believe that the Supreme Court should not overturn its decision on Roe v. Wade.

“The resolution being circulated for co-sponsorship today is a part of an unprecedented nationwide effort to protect and expand a woman’s right to safe, legal abortion. Legislative Republicans in Wisconsin and across the country have been relentless in their efforts to roll back Roe v. Wade and restrict women’s access to safe medical care. The Abortion is Health Care Resolution sends a clear message that every woman deserves the right to make important decisions about family matters without intrusion from politicians.”
