workersMADISON – Senator Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) offered the Democratic weekly radio address today. In her radio message, Sen. Shilling offered solutions on how to improve workplace flexibility and production.

jennifer-shilling"Parents who work hard shouldn't have to choose between putting food on the table and actually sitting down for a meal with their family. From paid family and sick leave, to affordable childcare and flexible work hours, we need to focus on helping parents make ends meet and be more productive in the workplace."- Sen. Jennifer Shilling

A written transcript of the address is below:

"Hi. I’m Senator Jennifer Shilling. While family lives have changed dramatically since the 1950's, many workplace policies haven't kept pace.

"With more dual-income households today, businesses are beginning to reform outdated policies and provide greater workplace flexibility, however, many working parents continue to face daily obstacles. Too many parents lack the flexibility to pick up a sick child from school or care for a newborn baby at home. Too many families lack access to quality, affordable childcare. And too many working parents struggle to make ends meet because a low minimum wage keeps them in poverty.

"If we want working families to succeed, we need to focus on tackling these issues. Parents who work hard shouldn't have to choose between putting food on the table and actually sitting down for a meal with their family. From paid family and sick leave, to affordable childcare and flexible work hours, we need to focus on helping parents make ends meet and be more productive in the workplace.

"In Wisconsin, we know our state does better when we all do better. Ensuring that working moms and dads have flexibility to balance their personal and professional lives will boost our middle class as well as the bottom line for local businesses. These are achievable goals, but we need to hold our leaders accountable and demand immediate action to support working families.”
