GREEN BAY, WI - “Alex Pretti, the man whom ICE agents fatally shot in Minneapolis yesterday, grew up in Green Bay. I never met the man, but I do know people who knew him and speak highly of him.

In America, we rely on the courts to sort through the details when people kill other people.

jamie-wall-ofcThat’s why I call on ICE and its federal overseers to cooperate with law enforcement in an investigation of the shootings of Mr. Pretti yesterday and of Renee Good earlier this month.

Immigration enforcement and border control are legitimate functions of government. In a democracy, however, government’s use of force must be impartial and professional to maintain its legitimacy in the eyes of the public.

ICE is not now an impartial and professional organization. Professional law enforcement officers undergo extensive training on how to deescalate situations for their own safety and that of the public they serve. I fear that ICE’s conduct in Minneapolis and elsewhere will make the job of the dedicated men and women in law enforcement here in Brown County more difficult.

At a minimum, ICE should adopt standard uniforms, remove the masks from its agents, and train or retrain them until they can interact safely with members of the public.”
