MADISON - Today in Milwaukee and Madison, Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, state Representative Lisa Subeck, and local community members and affordable housing advocates came together to highlight Vice President Harris’ proposal to lower housing costs across the nation. The press conferences come after Vice President Harris rolled out a comprehensive plan to lower housing costs earlier this month, including $25,000 in down payment support for first-time homebuyers, and support to build 3 million new homes across the country. Vice President Harris’ proposals are a stark contrast from Trump’s Project 2025 agenda, which would make housing more expensive, raise mortgage costs, and allow corporate landlords to exploit families and spike rent for Wisconsinites. As president, Donald Trump consistently tried to gut affordable housing programs and even attempted to triple rents on the poorest Americans in federally subsidized housing – putting one million children at risk of homelessness. Congresswoman Gwen Moore, Kelton Buford, and Amber Chavez speak at a press conference in front of a renovated home in Milwaukee. “Kamala Harris has made a promise to build 3 million new housing units that will be affordable. We have found from research and what we know that we are just about the number, 3 million houses short,” said Congresswoman Moore. “When there is a limit in housing that enables corporate landlords to jack up the prices for competition when the lack of housing becomes an issue. President Trump shifted tax benefits to those who are in the real estate business instead of people who are in the business of raising their families. The Harris-Walz team has said we’re going to make a shift in that. We are going to transfer those benefits to everyday Americans.” Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway, State Rep. Lisa Subeck, and Madison Alder Sabrina Madison speak at a press conference in Madison. “Vice President Harris and Governor Walz are committed to tackling one of the costliest things families across America worry about – the cost of housing… As the only candidate with a comprehensive, four-year plan to lower housing costs for working families, I trust Vice President Harris to tackle this crisis head-on, including by helping cities make housing more affordable,” said Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway. “Between Trump’s Project 2025 agenda and Vice President Harris’ New Way Forward, the choice couldn’t be clearer. Only Vice President Harris and Governor Walz have a plan to address the housing crisis in America.” “The only people who would be better off under Trump’s Project 2025 housing agenda are billionaires and the corporations that have contributed to the housing crisis in the first place. He just doesn’t care about us. He only cares about himself – and lining his own pockets and the pockets of his billionaire donors,” said state Representative Lisa Subeck. “Families can’t afford another Trump administration – which is why it’s so important that we elect Vice President Harris and Governor Walz this November.” “I was happy to learn of her new proposal. A $25,000 down payment would be huge. The down payment would give me the opportunity to purchase a home and have a stable place for my 6- and 13-year-olds to grow up in,” said Amber Chavez, a single mother in Milwaukee who hopes that Vice President Harris’ $25,000 down-payment support proposal will help her buy a home. |
