women-health-servicesMADISON – Tomorrow marks one year since the Supreme Court of the United States ruled on Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, overturning Roe v. Wade and ending the nearly 50-year-old constitutional right to abortion access. State Senate Democratic Leader, Sen. Melissa Agard (D-Madison) released the following statement:

melissa-agard“Politicians have absolutely no place playing the role of doctors. Abortion care is health care and I, along with the vast majority of Wisconsinites, believe that safe, comprehensive reproductive care should be accessible to all women, just like it had been for nearly 50 years.

“Since the Dobbs decision one year ago, abortion has been criminalized in Wisconsin due to draconian statutory language enacted in 1849. For the past year, our state has forced women into profoundly dangerous situations because of a law passed long before women even had the right to vote. Despite the efforts of Legislative Democrats to restore the constitutional right to abortion, Republicans in control of the State Legislature have repeatedly shown their disregard for women’s rights in the state of Wisconsin.

“We know that when abortion is inaccessible, women die and our state is less safe. My Senate Democratic colleagues and I will continue to fight until full access to safe, legal abortion is re-established in our state and all pregnant people are in charge of their own health care decisions.

“As Republicans continue their years-long authoritarian assault restricting the rights of people, Wisconsin Democrats stand with the majority of Wisconsinites who want to see our state restore long-held reproductive freedoms.”
