MADISON – January 22, 2023 will mark the 50th anniversary of the United States Supreme Court ruling of Roe v. Wade, making abortion a constitutionally protected right for nearly fifty years. Senator Agard reacts to the anniversary:

melissa-agard“Today, we should be commemorating, not memorializing the 50th anniversary of Roe v. Wade. The people of our nation should be celebrating a monumental Supreme Court ruling which recognized that the decision whether to continue or end a pregnancy belongs to the individual, not the government.

“Unfortunately, due to Roe being wrongfully overturned by a politically-charged, activist Supreme Court, women in Wisconsin are living as second class citizens. In our state, individuals and medical professionals are restrained by an 1849 law that was passed 70 years before women could vote and before the Civil War even began. This 1800s-era law is contrary to current medical standards and best practices and is not reflective of the will of Wisconsinites.

“Yet, legislative Republicans refuse to enact legislation that honors individual liberties and respects the medical privacy of women. The Republican attacks on the rights of pregnant people are relentless. They’re anti-freedom, anti-science, and anti-women.

“Access to safe and affordable abortion is a fundamental human right. No government entity should interfere with complex medical decisions and there is absolutely no room for a politician, law enforcement officer, or judge in the doctor’s office of any individual. Governor Evers, my Democratic colleagues, and I will never stop fighting for your right to access abortion care. We will not stop until reproductive freedom is restored in our state, and in our nation.”
