katrina_shanklandMADISON - Today Assistant Assembly Democratic Leader Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point) offered the Democratic Weekly Radio Address. The topic this week is a Dane County judge's ruling striking down Wisconsin’s so-called “Right to Work” law.

"While last week’s ruling is a tremendous step in the right direction, there is still a lot more to do to grow our economy and bring back our middle class," Rep. Shankland said. "That’s why Assembly Democrats have pursued an economic opportunity and middle-class agenda to grow jobs and wages and make us competitive in the global economy. We have also advocated for sustainable transportation funding, full and fair funding for our public schools, and reforms to make our jobs agency and government more accountable to taxpayers."

The audio file of this week’s address can be found here and a video version can be viewed here or below.

A written transcript of the address is below:

Last week, a Dane County judge struck down Wisconsin’s so-called “Right to Work” law – a law which was passed by the Republican legislature and signed by Governor Walker a year ago.

This ruling is a tremendous victory for workers’ rights, middle-class families and our entire state. States with “Right to Work” laws – on average – experience lower wages, and that is wrong for Wisconsin.

While last week’s ruling is a tremendous step in the right direction, there is still a lot more to do to grow our economy and bring back our middle class. Since Republicans took control of our state five years ago, Wisconsin has continually experienced lagging job growth, stagnant wages and a shrinking middle class.

That’s why Assembly Democrats have pursued an economic opportunity and middle-class agenda to grow jobs and wages and make us competitive in the global economy. We have also advocated for sustainable transportation funding, full and fair funding for our public schools, and reforms to make our jobs agency and government more accountable to taxpayers.

Unfortunately, Republican legislators refused to even consider any of these proposals, but we will not give up. We will continue to push an agenda that focuses on top priorities of our citizens so we can build a stronger economy, a stronger middle class and a stronger Wisconsin.
