MADISON – As Republican legislators look to further expand Gov. Walker’s unaccountable voucher school program, families in Rhinelander and Northland Pines school districts have once again been forced into a referendum to maintain vital services and provide local children with a quality education.

“Families in Rhinelander and Northland Pines can thank Senator Tom Tiffany for this latest increase in their local property taxes,” said SSDC Executive Director Matt Ullsvik. “Sen. Tiffany’s decision to cut state funding for local schools while sending more tax dollars to the private school voucher program has forced school districts across the state to make tough choices.”

Rhinelander and Northland Pines are not alone in dealing with a difficult budget due to Republican education cuts. Scores of school districts across Wisconsin have been forced to increase class sizes, eliminate sports programs and reduce after-school activities to make up for reduced state funding. Meanwhile, Republicans continue to expand the unaccountable voucher school program and divert millions of dollars to private schools in Milwaukee and Racine.

“It’s clear that Tom Tiffany cares more about the wealthy special interests behind the voucher program than protecting local communities and taxpayers,” added Ullsvik. “Rather than continuing to sell out Northwoods schools and send tax dollars to Milwaukee and Racine, Tom Tiffany should work to restore the historic cuts he voted for.”
