MADISON– On Tuesday, November 14th the Indian Community School and Indigenous community leaders and advocates will travel to the Capitol to join legislators to support a bill introduced by Representative David Bowen (Milwaukee-D) that would replace Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day in the state of Wisconsin. Last year, the Indian Community School’s 4th graders successfully pushed to have the day recognized in Milwaukee County through a resolution.

The Indian Community School, Representatives, and Senators will be joined by Mark Denning of the Menominee and Oneida Nations as well as Ronnie Preston of the Apache Nation. The press conference will be followed by a legislators briefing and a rally including speakers and various performances in support of this bill and in celebration of Native American History Month.

david-bowen“It is important to learn about and understand even the most shameful aspects of our history, but that doesn’t mean we should celebrate them and negate the truth. As freedom-loving Americans, it is ironic that we would celebrate an individual whose legacy is built on the destruction of freedom for so many who already lived in the “New World” upon the arrival of Columbus,” said Bowen. “Instead of celebrating Columbus, who is more accurately credited with initiating the trans-Atlantic slave trade than with discovering America, this bill observes the importance of Indigenous Peoples to our society. Our children especially deserve a state that recognizes the truth so our schools can teach the same.”
