NORTHEAST, WI - As Scott Walker and Republican politicians ignore the consequences of their $250 million budget cut to the UW-System, Wisconsin students are feeling the effects first-hand around the state.

Whether it is UW-Madison or UW-Whitewater, every part of the UW-System has been impacted by these irresponsible cuts and misplaced priorities. The effects are very real: some students are taking longer to graduate because of classes being canceled, the state is losing out on top-notch faculty, and essential student services are being cut.

In northeast Wisconsin, we have seen $2.4 million and $6.6 million cut from UW-Green Bay and UW-Oshkosh, respectively. The cuts have led to a myriad of problems at each school.

At UW-Green Bay, learning resources, such as journals and databases, have had their access to students greatly reduced. Students are being short-changed on the amount of information that is readily available to them, and in turn, it is affecting the quality of their work.

UW-Oshkosh is facing a different set of problems. Many classes have been cut, and class sizes have been inflated. In addition, services to connect students with local businesses and find jobs after school have been cut. It is no surprise that the cuts to the UW-System have a negative effect on our economy.

"The effects of these cuts in the northeast region of Wisconsin are eroding the ability of Wisconsin's public colleges and universities to offer a top-notch education and perform the cutting-edge research that made our UW-System world renown," Democratic Party of Wisconsin Executive Director Kory Kozloski said on Tuesday. "Democrats believe in prioritizing higher education and not penalizing students at UW-Green Bay or UW-Oshkosh for seeking a degree. It's time to restore the UW-System to its proper place as an engine for innovation, research, entrepreneurialism, and job creation."
