Betsy DeVosShe has spearheaded the effort in Wisconsin to take money away from public schools to benefit unaccountable private schools, and her appointment shows these are top priorities for the President-Elect.

MADISON - The following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair, Martha Laning, on the appointment of billionaire voucher school financier, Betsy DeVos, as Secretary of Education:

martha-laning"Wisconsin knows first hand the danger Betsy DeVos poses as head of the Department of Education. DeVos' American Federation for Children has invested nearly $5 million in Wisconsin elections in the last six years and spearheaded the effort to take money away from public schools to benefit unaccountable private schools in our state.

"The results of DeVos' crusade in our state has been far less accountability and a failure to invest in the children attending our public schools. DeVos' work in Wisconsin should supremely disqualify her to run the Department of Education.

"While I hope that the Trump administration will work with Democrats to help all children in our nation get the quality education they deserve. This appointment is very disappointing to me, it is clearly one of pure ideology and a signal that privatizing schools and defunding public education are top priorities for the President-Elect."
