asian-american-pacific-islanderMADISON -- Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler issued the following statement in response to the tragic shootings in Atlanta and acts of hate against the AAPI community:

“Three weeks ago, Wisconsin Democrats spoke out against the rise of anti-Asian violence across our country. We are heartbroken that this violence has only intensified, culminating with this week’s heinous murder of 8 people in Atlanta, including 6 Asian women. We mourn their loss, and our hearts break for their families.

“Closer to home, we were saddened to hear that a van belonging to the Hmong American Center in Wausau was vandalized this week. A small, nonprofit community center, the Hmong American Center has worked through this pandemic to support the Hmong community with food boxes, rental assistance, help with unemployment, youth mentoring and support for homebound elders. As a community group with limited resources, such a hateful act of vandalism has a real and direct impact on services to elders and to families relying on deliveries of food.

“It is on all of us to come together as one Wisconsin family and heal the trust shattered by these acts of hate. We must listen and be present for our Asian-American and Pacific Islander friends and neighbors, we must answer their calls to action, we must reject the forces of white supremacy and misogyny, and we must press to ensure justice is done. On a week when Rush Limbaugh — one of the foremost purveyors of hate and division in recent American history — was honored by Republicans on the floor of our State Senate and Assembly, the evidence is overwhelming: we must do better. It is all of our job to #StopAsianHate.”

rush-limbaugh-2020-nbcRepublican resolution honoring Rush Limbaugh was another partisan political exercise aimed at further dividing our state, says DPW Chair.

MADISON -- Following today’s vote by Republicans in the Wisconsin State Senate to honor Rush Limbaugh, Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Ben Wikler issued the following statement:

ben-wikler-dpw“Today’s Republican resolution honoring Rush Limbaugh was another partisan political exercise aimed at further dividing our state. After refusing to even take up a resolution honoring Black History Month and the achievements of Black Americans with Wisconsin ties including Hank Aaron and Vice President Kamala Harris, Republicans made time today to honor a man who once made a racist parody song disparaging America’s first Black president a regular feature of his radio show.

“Make no mistake: the GOP effort to lionize Rush Limbaugh is a naked attempt to legitimize the race-baiting and fear-mongering that Limbaugh pioneered and that Donald Trump built his political career upon. By honoring Rush Limbaugh on the floor of the Wisconsin State Senate, Republicans are once again showing us exactly who they are, and we should believe them.”

Additional Background on who Republicans chose to honor today:

Early in his career, Rush Limbaugh once told a Black caller to “take that bone out of your nose and call me back.” Limbaugh once said that the NAACP should ‘practice riots’ and ‘get a liquor store and practice robberies.’ In 2004, Limbaugh suggested that the NBA rename itself the “Thug Basketball Association” and in 2007 he told his listeners that “The NFL all too often looks like a game between the Bloods and the Crips without any weapons.” That same year, he began airing the so-called parody song referenced above, “Barack, the Magic Negro.”

MADISON - Tuesday, Senator Melissa Agard (D-Madison) and Democratic colleagues from the State Senate and State Assembly joined with UnityPoint Meriter nurses at a press conference advocating for a fair contract as they head into further contract negotiations this week. Senator Agard released the following statement:

melissa-agard-sargent“The UnityPoint Meriter nurses have not chosen the easy path. No one makes the decision to give a strike notification lightly. Inherently, they have chosen a career in nursing because they are caretakers. They ensure our community is healthy and safe, and ensure our family members are cared for during the most challenging times in their lives.

“The fact is, you can’t talk about nurses as “health care heroes” and then treat them as less than that. The commitment, passion, and determination of Wisconsin’s nurses has never been more clear. Everyday, they advocate for their patients and now they are simply advocating for themselves. To every nurse at UnityPoint Meriter, I honor your sacrifice, I understand the value in the work that you do, and I will stand shoulder to shoulder with you throughout these contract negotiations until you get a fair deal.

“Everything the UnityPoint Meriter nurses are calling for is what each of us would expect from a job including: a safe work environment, fair compensation, and work-life balance. They are simply asking for a fair deal so they can take care of themselves and their families.”

mike-gallagherGallagher joined all of his fellow Republicans in opposing the American Rescue Plan signed into law by President Biden Thursday.

MADISON — Republican Congressman Mike Gallagher voted this week to reject more than $5.7 billion for Wisconsin’s state and local governments, including millions for the counties and cities he represents in Wisconsin’s 8th Congressional District.

Gallagher joined all of his fellow Republicans in opposing the American Rescue Plan signed into law by President Biden yesterday. In doing so, he opposed more than $14.7 million for the city of Appleton and more than $25.2 million for his own hometown of Green Bay.

Gallagher also voted against more than $174 million for Eighth District counties.

“Help is on the way for Wisconsin families and businesses, but only because Mike Gallagher didn’t get his way,” said Chair of the Wisconsin Democratic Party, Ben Wikler. “The American Rescue plan includes $1,400 survival checks for American families, extended unemployment benefits, funding for vaccine distribution, and aid to help cities and states pay essential workers and provide vital services. None of those measures should be partisan or controversial one year into a global pandemic, but Mike Gallagher continues to put politics over people.”

The pandemic and recession have simultaneously increased spending needs and devastated revenues for state and local governments. The State and Local Fiscal Aid funding in the American Rescue plan will allow Wisconsin counties and municipalities to retain or rehire first responders, public health officials, and other essential public servants and to preserve critical services for residents.

Below are the funding allocations for Eighth District counties, which Congressman Gallagher worked to derail.

  • $14,759,070 for the city of Appleton
  • $25,234,117 for the city of Green Bay
  • $51,306,292 for Brown County
  • $9,714,453 for Calumet County
  • $5,366,038 for Door County
  • $3,963,048 for Kewaunee County
  • $7,825,634 for Marinette County
  • $883,608 for Menominee County
  • $7,356,290 for Oconto County
  • $36,439,139 for Outagamie County
  • $7,932,109 for Shawano County
  • $9,889,197 for Waupaca County
  • $33,340,304 for Winnebago County
