uw-madison-bascomRepublicans complain about course named “The Problem of Whiteness” which is being offered in the spring semester as a part of the African Cultural Studies Department.

MADISON - On Wednesday, December 21st, Rep. Dana Wachs (D-Eau Claire) responded to comments made by Republican legislators about a course being offered at UW-Madison. The course is titled “The Problem of Whiteness” and is being offered in the spring semester as a part of the African Cultural Studies Department.

dana_wachs“It’s disheartening that Republicans only seem to care about the University of Wisconsin when they are offended by what is being taught, and not when it comes to properly funding our UW System to compete in today’s economy,” said Wachs, the ranking Democrat on the Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities. “We should be embracing that we have students and professors who are taking a hard look at the issues affecting our world and encourage them to do so without the constant threat of even more cuts to their funding.”

Earlier this week, frequent UW System critic Sen. Steve Nass was joined by Rep. David Murphy, chair of the Assembly Committee on Colleges and Universities, in condemning this course offering. In a statement Murphy said “I am extremely concerned that UW-Madison finds it appropriate to teach a course called, ‘The Problem of Whiteness,’ with the premise that white people are racist.”

In a statement responding to this criticism, UW-Madison said “We believe this course, which is one of thousands offered at our university, will benefit students who are interested in developing a deeper understanding of race issues. The course is a challenge and response to racism of all kinds.”

“I know that certain issues are uncomfortable for some of us in our society to discuss, but shouldn’t those be the issues that we work the hardest to address?” added Wachs. “Republican legislators need to stop viewing UW-Madison as some sort of liberal enemy to be defeated and recognize the true economic, social, and cultural value that it has brought to our state and country for decades. They can continue to defend these attacks on both funding and curriculum as ‘standing up for taxpayers’ but Wisconsin is a better place economically, socially, and culturally when we have a strong University system and flagship university like UW-Madison.”

elderlyMADISON, WI - Today State Senator Tim Carpenter (D-Milwaukee) asked Governor Scott Walker to use his influence on the national stage to help protect Wisconsin’s seniors.

tim-carpenter“I have read your letter to President-Elect Donald Trump and I believe that there are areas of concern that you may have overlooked; namely, the protection of our most vulnerable senior citizens," Senator Carpenter stated in his letter to Governor Walker. "We have seen time and again attacks on SeniorCare, one of our most successful programs, and I believe that it is time to make this program permanent. I believe that it’s long overdue that you seek a federal waiver to make SeniorCare a permanent program in Wisconsin.”

Senator Carpenter noted that SeniorCare serves around 60,000 seniors and saves tens of millions of dollars for Wisconsin’s seniors and taxpayers. He called for an end to the sense of unease and undue stress for those who rely on SeniorCare.

“While your letter focuses on punitive measures, I believe we can also do some good and use your connections to President-Elect Donald Trump to ask for a permanent waiver for our SeniorCare program," Carpenter said. "Doing this could help bring certainty to those living with chronic illness, on fixed incomes, and with limited resources. These seniors deserve to know that the Wisconsin prescription drug program, that they count on, will be there for them and not subject to unnecessary unease every two years.”

trump-walkerGov. Walker writes President-elect Donald Trump today proposing costly, discriminatory and unconstitutional policies aimed at punishing workers and dividing communities.

MADISON, WI – Ignoring Wisconsin’s looming budget deficit, historic school cuts, an ongoing transportation funding crisis and widening income inequality, Gov. Scott Walker wrote to President-elect Donald Trump today seeking to put polluters and wealthy special interests ahead of working families.

Rather than creating jobs and expanding economic opportunities, Gov. Walker is once again proposing a range of costly, discriminatory and unconstitutional policies aimed at punishing workers and dividing communities.

jennifer-shilling“It’s no surprise that Gov. Walker wants to team up with President-elect Trump to put polluters and wealthy special interests ahead of Wisconsin’s working families," said Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) in a statement. "These are the same unconstitutional and misguided Republican policies that have decimated Wisconsin’s middle class, cut family wages and resulted in 20 consecutive quarters of below-average economic performance."

“Families want us to focus on boosting wages, strengthening schools, making child care more affordable and improving retirement security," Shilling continued. "Rather than rejecting federal funding for health care, broadband and transportation like Gov. Walker has done, Democrats want to ensure that tax dollars paid by Wisconsin families are being returned here to our state and used to strengthen our middle class.”
