road-local-wiLAB audit shows state highways rated in good condition decreased steadily from 53.5% in 2010 to 41% in 2015. The fact that our roads and bridges are crumbling cannot be ignored.

MADISON – Today, the nonpartisan Legislative Audit Bureau (LAB) released its audit of the state highway program, which analyzed trends in state highway conditions, program expenditures, and the Department of Transportation’s (DOT’s) management of highway projects.

katrina-shanklandA major finding of the report was the declining condition of Wisconsin’s highways. The LAB found that the proportion of state highways rated in good condition decreased steadily from 53.5% in 2010 to 41% in 2015. Additionally, as measured by the international roughness index, Wisconsin’s highways ranked considerably lower than six other Midwestern states and the entire nation.

gordon_hintz“The fact that our roads and bridges are crumbling cannot be ignored,” said Rep. Katrina Shankland (D-Stevens Point). “The data speaks for itself, and Wisconsin families are experiencing it in their daily lives. The governor and Republican lawmakers' failure to develop a sustainable transportation funding solution should be considered an abdication of duty by the majority party. Their lack of leadership and urgency on this critical issue is having profound effects on our state’s workers, industry, and the economy.”

“It’s past due for the legislature to pass a transportation budget that puts our infrastructure on a long-term, sustainable path,” continued Rep. Gordon Hintz (D-Oshkosh). “Year after year, the Republican majority has paid lip service to our transportation needs while delaying major projects and placing millions on the state’s credit card through bonding. The state cannot afford to continue down this path of uncertainty and fiscal irresponsibility.”

Does Duffy Support Hiking Home Insurance Premiums? PDF Print E-mail

sean_duffyMay go up as much as $900 on Wisconsin households under plan.

MADISON - In four days, one of the first administrative orders of the Trump Presidency will go into effect, sticking American homeowners with higher insurance premiums on their Federal House Administration-insured mortgages. Homeowners could see the costs of homeownership rise due to President Trump's administrative order. Wisconsin households in the 7th Congressional District are wondering: does Rep. Sean Duffy support making owning a home, a central piece of the American dream, more expensive?

Wisconsinites have been taking it on the chin for years as owning and maintaining a home has become an increasingly heavy financial burden. Earlier this month, former President Barack Obama issued an executive action requiring the Federal Housing Administration (FHA) to decrease insurance premiums on FHA mortgages, a change that could have potentially saved low-income homeowners as much as $900 per year.

"For months, Wisconsin has watched Rep. Sean Duffy defend and apologize for President Donald Trump's radical ideas and outlandish behavior on the campaign trail. Will Rep. Duffy again choose Washington D.C. over the heartland now that President Trump is making it more onerous for residents in his district to secure a home loan and achieve the cornerstone of the American Dream?" Democratic Party of Wisconsin spokesman Brandon Weathersby said on Monday. "From failing to support Buy America provisions in major legislation to signing an executive order to raise home insurance premiums, President Trump has sent clear signals that he isn't on the side of working Wisconsinites. Families in the Badger State need to know if Rep. Duffy sides with them or with Washington's special interests and the big insurance companies."

Walker’s Proposes More Child Care Work Restrictions PDF Print E-mail

walker-open-businessIf Gov. Walker really wants to help workers and grow our middle class, he could work to raise family wages, lower student loan debt, invest in infrastructure and expand child care tax credits.

MADISON – After years of Republican policies that have cut family wages, shrunk the middle class and increased student loan debt, Gov. Walker is proposing more restrictions on working families in need of assistance. His latest proposal creates new rules and regulations for workers struggling to make ends meet while adding additional layers of state bureaucracy.

jennifer-shilling“Once again, Gov. Walker is creating one set of rules for working families and another set of rules for the wealthy and well-connected," Senate Democratic Leader Jennifer Shilling (D-La Crosse) said in a statement. "Why should working families have to jump through bureaucratic hoops to get help with rising childcare costs while 11 individuals making over $35 million a year are handed millions in tax breaks with no strings attached?"

“For too many hardworking Wisconsin families, Gov. Walker’s race-to-the-bottom economy is not working for them," said Shilling. "Republican tax breaks that favor millionaires and corporations are shifting a greater burden onto workers."

Since Gov. Walker took office in 2011, Wisconsin has fallen below the national average for job creation for 20 consecutive quarters.

"If Gov. Walker really wants to help workers and grow our middle class, Democrats stand ready with a range of proposals to raise family wages, lower student loan debt, invest in infrastructure and expand child care tax credits," Shilling concluded. "It's time we reward hard work, not the wealthy and well-connected.”
