paul-ryanThe Office of Congressional Ethics, created in 2008 after a series of scandals involving members of Congress, was designed to ensure accountability and transparency. Washington Republicans want it gone on Day 1.

MADISON - In a late night, private conference vote, Speaker Paul Ryan and Congressional Republicans voted to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics, the independent watchdog organization that oversees the behavior and actions of and investigates criminal conduct by members of Congress.

martha-laning"In November's election, the voters made it clear that they wanted to end corruption and drain big money from our nation's politics. Instead of listening to the will of the people, Republicans decided their very first move would be to remove incredibly important oversight of their actions in Congress," Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Martha Laning on Tuesday. "This isn't draining the swamp. This is adding more sludge to a swamp already filled with influence from wealthy special interests and huge corporations."

The Office of Congressional Ethics, created in 2008 after a series of scandals involving members of Congress, is designed to ensure accountability and transparency in the U.S. Congress, and without it, members of Congress lack proper oversight.

"The American people are fed up with being sold promises to end corruption, only to see lawmakers do the exact opposite once they get into office. So, the question facing many Wisconsinites today is if any of our state's Republican lawmakers voted to gut the Office of Congressional Ethics," said Laning. "Wisconsinites deserve to know if Rep. Duffy, Rep. Sensenbrenner, Rep. Grothman, or Rep. Gallagher feel that they should not be accountable to their constituents and voted to remove important oversight of Congress."

trump-nuclearPresident-elect Trump has talked about using nuclear weapons in Europe and against ISIS.

MADISON - The groups and candidates who helped our grassroots campaign haven't stopped doing great work. The first group I'd like for you to consider supporting -- if you don't already -- is the Council for a Livable World. During my campaign, they endorsed me for Senate and raised nearly 2,‌000 grassroots contributions from their members.

Council for a Livable World is continuing to lead the fight for progressive national security, and they need your help. Sign up to join them tod‌ay.

Council for a Livable World has worked to promote sensible and progressive national security for over 5‌0 yea‌rs. They've been at the forefront of some of the biggest arms control achievements, like the post-Cold War U.S. nuclear test moratorium; The Chemical Weapons Convention; And numerous arms control treaties.

President-elect Trump has talked about using nuclear weapons in Europe and against ISIS. He also suggested that more countries should get access to nuclear weapons, and that he'll "rip up" the Iran Deal -- one of our nation's biggest diplomatic achievements in a generation.

We can't let any of this happen. Fortunately, our close friends at the Council for a Livable World are leading the charge against Trump's disastrous agenda.

The Council has also helped to elect hundreds of progressive national security champions, and they worked hard to help our campaign. Add your name tod‌ay to join them in 2‌017 -- and onward.

If they're going to stay strong against our President-elect and his reckless, dangerous foreign policy agenda, the Council for a Livable World needs your help.

Thanks for your support, and for pledging to keep up the fight.

trumpWisconsin Democratic legislators call on President-Elect Donald Trump to support an investigation into Russia's meddling with the presidential election during Tuesday press call. Leaders ask him to keep campaign promise to "Drain the Swamp" in making cabinet choices.

MADISON - Wisconsin Democrats Congresswomen and Rep. JoCasta Zamarripa called on President-Elect Donald Trump to support an investigation into Russia's meddling with the presidential election in a telephone press conference at 11:00 PM CT on Tuesday..

In addition, they will demand Trump honor his campaign promise to "drain the swamp." So far Donald Trump's cabinet choices and the actions of his Republican colleagues shows Trump has no interest in real change.

Just last week, house Republicans, under the leadership of Speaker Paul Ryan, shot down the Buy America Amendment of the Water Resources Development Act that would ensure United States water projects affiliated with the WRDA buy American steel and iron. If Donald Trump is serious about creating jobs here at home, he will denounce the actions of Speaker Ryan as he has done in the past and pick cabinet members who are focused on creating jobs in America, not abroad.

paul-ryanTrump talked about putting American workers first, but Republicans in Congress dropped a "Buy America" provision from the Water Resource Development Act (WRDA) that would have protected American industry and workers.

MADISON - While President-elect Trump campaigned on putting American workers first, Speaker Paul Ryan and House Republicans have a different idea in mind. This week, Speaker Ryan dropped a "Buy America" provision from the Water Resource Development Act (WRDA), a deal which was nearly finalized before Ryan axed the provision that would have protected American industry and workers.

duffyCommittee leaders had almost reached a deal on finalizing the WRDA, including the "Buy America" provision in which Sen. Tammy Baldwin was the lead Senate sponsor. Sen. Baldwin's “Buy American” standard would ensure that any water infrastructure projects associated with the WRDA would use American iron and steel. This standard passed the Senate with broad bipartisanship and is supported by the United Steelworkers Union and Wisconsin Manufacturers.

"Speaker Paul Ryan, Rep. Sean Duffy, and House Republicans are selling main street down-stream, and instead, are looking out for their corporate friends and wealthy special interests," Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Martha Laning said on Thursday. "If our new President-elect is truly going to put workers first, he should show it right now, and stand up to House Republicans who have put American jobs and manufacturers in jeopardy."
