jeff-sessions-sergey-kislyakThe Department of Justice has proven incapable of pursuing an independent investigation into Russia’s connections with the Trump team. We need a real independent investigation.

MADISON - The following is the statement of Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Martha Laning with regards to news reports that Attorney General Jeff Sessions, our top law enforcement officer, may have lied under oath to cover up his own contacts with the Russian government during the campaign:

martha-laning"We now know explosive information both about what happened between Russian officials and the Trump campaign and about the Trump administration's efforts to cover it up. The most disturbing new knowledge is that Attorney General Jeff Sessions may have lied under oath to cover up his own contacts with the Russian government. In his own sworn testimony at his confirmation hearings Sessions denied contact with the Russians. Now, it turns out that Sessions met with the Russian ambassador in person twice.

jeff-sessions-donald-trump"In less than two months of the Trump administration, we've seen two high-ranking officials come under fire for lying about their communications with the Russians. We know top Trump aides were communicating with Russian spies, which is bad enough. We need a full and expedient investigation on possible charges of perjury and treason to uncover whether they were coordinating during the election. We need our Republican friends to join hands with us and commit to support real independent investigations into this matter to answer the questions that won't go away any other way.

"Sessions' recusal is not enough. Donald Trump’s Department of Justice has proven incapable of pursuing an independent investigation into Russia’s connections with the Trump team, and the American people will not stand for it. We've now reached a point where this scandal is bigger than any one individual, there is a pattern of troubling behavior between the current administration that could very well pose a real threat to the strength and vitality of our democracy."

Duffy Looks at 'Good Things' from Charleston Church Terrorist Attack PDF Print E-mail

vetmarchCongressman Sean Duffy reveals that he thought there was a difference between Quebec attack where six Muslim residents were killed by a right-wing terrorist and the the ones inspired by ISIS.

MADISON - Residents of Wisconsin's Seventh Congressional District might be having buyers remorse after electing Rep. Sean Duffy in November. Since scoring another chance to chase down corporate donations and appear on cable television, Rep. Sean Duffy has rebuffed Wisconsin values at every turn, but today he took his act to a new low.

sean_duffyThis morning on CNN, when pressed by CNN host Alisyn Camerota why President Trump failed to address the recent mosque attack in Quebec City, where six Muslim residents were killed by a right-wing supporter, Congressman Sean Duffy revealed that he thought there was a difference between attacks like the ones inspired by ISIS and the one that took place in Canada.

Duffy took it a step further when reminded that extremism, hatred, and white supremacy were common threads behind acts of terrorism like the attacks in Quebec City and Charleston, South Carolina. Duffy responded to the Charleston example, where nine innocent churchgoers were slain, that the outcome of Gov. Nikki Haley taking down the confederate flag was in fact "great."

Reporters nationwide have been taken aback by Duffy's insensitive, nonsensical, politically craven comments:

SalonRepublican Rep. Sean Duffy believes there is no comparison between radical Islamist attacks and violence carried out in the name of white supremacy. In fact, the Wisconsin congressman compared Trump’s silence on the Canadian mosque shooting to the media’s inadequate coverage of people getting “beat up for wearing a Make America Great Again hat.”

Huffington Post: Duffy argued in his CNN interview that attacks by white people ― such as the one in Quebec City ― aren’t as big of a problem.

RawStory: “You don’t think there are white extremists?” Camerota said. “You don’t remember Oklahoma City? You don’t think that this guy who was involved in the mosque shooting said that he was inspired by things that he read online?” Duffy conceded that the “New Day” host had provided a second example, but he dismissed Timothy McVeigh as not recent enough to be relevant. Camerota asked the congressman if he remembered Charleston, where a white supremacist gunned down nine black worshipers in 2015, and she asked whether those killings mattered.

RawStory, ctd: “No, it does matter,” he said. “It does matter. Look at the good things that came from it. Nikki Haley took down the Confederate flag — that was great. But you want to say, I can give you a couple examples, but there’s no constant threat that goes through these attacks, and you have radical Islamic terrorists and ISIS that are driving the attacks, and if you want to compare those two, maybe you can throw another one.”

Rare.us: The congressman also said that those who had not seen the place affected by terror first-hand would not be able to understand the impact, prompting Camerota to remind him that both she and her network visited those places.

supreme-courtA People For the American Way (PFAW) TV ad urges us to call our senators to oppose President Trump’s Supreme Court pick, Judge Neil Gorsuch. He has criticized courts being used to advance core constitutional rights.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - People For the American Way (PFAW) announced a TV ad on Thursday urging viewers to call their senators to oppose President Trump’s Supreme Court pick, Judge Neil Gorsuch. The ad, which features an image of judge ripping up the Constitution, details why Judge Gorsuch is unfit to sit on the nation’s highest court. The ad will run for one week in Alaska, Arizona, Florida, Indiana, Maine, Missouri, Montana, Nevada, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and West Virginia.

Neil Gorsuch“Americans know we need Supreme Court justices who will protect the most fundamental American freedoms, and Judge Gorsuch cannot be trusted to do that,” stated PFAW President Michael Keegan. “We’re releasing this ad to shine a spotlight on the threat Judge Gorsuch poses to the America Way. We urge Americans across the country to call their senators and make clear that they expect their senators to stand up against Gorsuch, a Supreme Court nominee who prioritizes corporate interests over the constitutional rights that Americans rely on.”

“Judge Gorsuch has criticized courts being used to advance core constitutional rights, e.g. the rights of LGBTQ people, but he does think the courts should be used to prop up corporations at the expense of everyday Americans. That’s absurd.” said PFAW Executive Vice President Marge Baker. “Supreme Court justices serve for life—Trump could devastate fundamental rights for decades if the Senate confirms Judge Gorsuch, but we have the power to stop him by calling on our senators today to oppose this extreme nominee.”

dakota-access-pipelineUnclear why Cramer would issue statement, as Environmental Impact Statement is still incomplete. Decision would be a huge setback for the Standing Rock Sioux and others who have opposed the pipeline route.

WASHINGTON, D.C. - North Dakota Congressman Kevin Cramer said on YouTube Tuesday that the Army Corps of Engineers will be granting the easement for the Dakota Access Pipeline to cross beneath Lake Oahe.

kevin_cramer_congressThis approval would be needed to complete construction of the project, and follows President Trump’s Jan. 24 memorandum to the Secretary of the Army, directing that all federal agency reviews and approvals be expedited to complete the remaining portions of the pipeline.

It is unclear why Cramer would issue this statement at this time. According to the FEDERAL REGISTER, the Notice of Intent To Prepare an Environmental Impact Statement in Connection With Dakota Access, LLC's Request for an Easement To Cross Lake Oahe, by the Army Department on 01/18/2017, sets the North Dakota Army Core of Engineers' comment period for the Environmental Impact Statement as open until February 20, 2017. Are they are approving the Easement before they finish their own review?

Congressman Cramer's YouTube Statement is presented below:

League of Women Voters Takes Stand on Immigration PDF Print E-mail

statue-of-libertyDeportation of non-criminal undocumented immigrants is discrimination and wrong. The Trump Administration’s orders are of dubious legality and the Executive Branch may not refuse to obey federal court orders.

WASHINGTON, DC – The League of Women Voters president, Chris Carson, issued the following statement in response to President Trump's immigration ban:

"The League of Women Voters is opposed to deportation of non-criminal undocumented immigrants.

The League supports cities, towns, counties and states that make a decision not to cooperate with federal deportation and enforcement actions that include non-criminal undocumented immigrants.  Moreover, the Trump Administration’s orders are of dubious legality.

It is simply wrong, and a perversion of the American system of justice, for the Executive Branch to refuse to obey federal court orders.

The LWV is opposed to discrimination, including discrimination in immigration, based on religion.  The Trump Administration’s orders appear to be targeted at Muslims and immigrants from majority-Muslims nations."

See the original statement here and League's national positions on Immigration and Nondiscrimination here.
