elderlyTrumpCare would kick millions of Americans off their health insurance - including those with pre-existing conditions. All in the name of tax giveaways for the super-rich.

MADISON - Last month, Congressional Republicans scrambled to ram their TrumpCare bill through the House of Representatives on a tight vote despite reports that the bill would likely kick millions of Americans off their health insurance - including those with pre-existing conditions. Today, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) and Joint Committee on Taxation (JCT) confirmed that speculation and brought Republican's vote into clear context.

According to a report released by the CBO and JCT, Wisconsin Republicans voted to kick 23 million Americans off of their health insurance by the year 2026 and to raise premiums on their own constituents to the tune of a twenty percent hike starting just next year.

The cost of TrumpCare:

  • 14 million to lose insurance by 2018
  • 19 million to lose insurance by 2020
  • 23 million to lose insurance by 2026
  • 51 million people under age 65 uninsured by 2026
  • Increased premiums by 20 percent in 2018
  • Increased premiums 5 by percent in 2019
  • $600 billion in tax giveaway to millionaires and billionaires

If Trumpcare becomes law older Americans will pay more, people with pre-existing conditions become subject to expensive high-risk pools, over $800 billion will be cut from Medicaid, states can opt out of the Affordable Care Act's essential benefits clause, and millions of women will face even higher hurdles to accessing critical health services - all in the name of tax giveaways for the super-rich.

martha-laning"It pained me to see Speaker Paul Ryan and other Wisconsin Republicans celebrating the passage of Trumpcare last month because I knew that their bill would be devastating for millions of Americans - especially those with pre-existing conditions. Now we know with certainty that 23 million Americans will potentially lose their care—including 14 million who would lose it thanks to their more than $800 billion cut to Medicaid," said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Chair Martha Laning. "Wisconsin Republicans should be ashamed of celebrating higher costs for seniors. They should be ashamed of celebrating health plans without essential benefits like mental health services and addiction treatment. They should be ashamed that they sold-out their own constituents for a massive tax giveaway for millionaires and billionaires like Donald Trump. I'm proud of Democratic members of Congress who continue to fight against this disastrous bill and stand up for our shared value that every American should have access to affordable, quality healthcare."

Paul Ryan Swears House GOP To Secrecy on Trump's Ties To Russia PDF Print E-mail

donald-trumpBefore Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy commented that he thought Trump was being paid by the Russians. Ryan swears Republicans to secrecy.

MADISON - Another day, another bombshell report concerning Donald Trump's ties to Russia. According to the Washington Post, a month before Donald Trump clinched the Republican nomination for president, House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy commented that he thought Trump was being paid by Russian President Vladimir Putin - Speaker Paul Ryan immediately stopped the conversation and swore the Republicans present to secrecy.

From the Washington Post
“There’s two people I think Putin pays: Rohrabacher and Trump,” McCarthy (R-Calif.) said, according to a recording of the June 15, 2016 exchange, which was listened to and verified by The Washington Post. Rep. Dana Rohrabacher is a Californian Republican known in Congress as a fervent defender of Putin and Russia.

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.) immediately interjected, stopping the conversation from further exploring McCarthy’s assertion, and swore the Republicans present to secrecy.

[..]

Some of the lawmakers laughed at McCarthy’s comment. Then McCarthy quickly added: “Swear to God.”

Ryan instructed his Republican lieutenants to keep the conversation private, saying: “No leaks...This is how we know we’re a real family here.”

The remarks remained secret for nearly a year.

[...]

When initially asked to comment on the exchange, Brendan Buck, a spokesman for Ryan, said: “That never happened,” and Matt Sparks, a spokesman for McCarthy, said: “The idea that McCarthy would assert this is absurd and false.”

After being told that The Post would cite a recording of the exchange, Buck, speaking for the GOP House leadership, said: “This
entire year-old exchange was clearly an attempt at humor. No one believed the majority leader was seriously asserting that Donald Trump or any of our members were being paid by the Russians. What’s more, the speaker and leadership team have repeatedly spoken out against Russia’s interference in our election, and the House continues to investigate that activity.”

“This was a failed attempt at humor,” Sparks said.

53 percent of Americans polled on Comey's firing disapprove of the President's decision, and 78 percent support an independent commission or special prosecutor to uncover the truth.

MADISON - The last week in politics was full of breaking news, controversial statements, and leaked information as more revelations related to the investigation into Russia's meddling into the 2016 election unraveled from the firing of former FBI Director James Comey. Unlike the rest of the nation, Speaker Paul Ryan was apparently unfazed and unbothered by the news, opting to toe the party line and reject what the majority of Americans are clamoring for: an independent commission and special prosecutor to handle the investigation into Russia's actions.

After the unexpected firing of former FBI Director James Comey, Speaker Paul Ryan took nearly twenty-four hours to respond to the news and once he did speak he outright rejected calls for an independent commission and special prosecutor to handle ongoing investigations into alleged ties between the Trump campaign and Russia. Last Friday, Ryan chose his party over his country again, doubling-down on his rejection during a stop in Racine parroting White House talking points on Comey's firing and declaring that the FBI should lead the remainder of the investigation.

A new NBC/WSJ Poll shows the majority of Americans disagree with the Janesville Republican on the topic. 53 percent of Americans who are informed on the details reported on Comey's firing disapprove of the President's decision. And when asked if they prefer Congress or an independent commission or special prosecutor to investigate Russia's involvement, 78 percent support an independent commission or special prosecutor.

Trump Falsely Claims Trumpcare Protects People With Pre-Existing Conditions PDF Print E-mail

donald-trumpTrump went on to repeat the lie SIX times. Here’s the full exchange and a reality check for the president.

MADISON - Yesterday, Donald Trump told one of his cruelest and most egregious lies to date: he claimed Trumpcare will protect people with pre-existing conditions.

THE TRUTH: Trumpcare actually guts protections for people with pre-existing conditions by possibly jacking up premiums to the point that they are wholly unaffordable.

This wasn’t a one-off. Trump went on to repeat the lie SIX times. Here’s the full exchange:

WATCH

Here’s a reality check for the president:

American Medical Association: Trump’s pre-existing condition “assurance may be illusory as health status underwriting could effectively make coverage completely unaffordable to people with pre-existing conditions."

New York Times: “Mr. Trump insisted that the Republican health legislation would not allow discrimination against people with pre-existing medical conditions, an assertion contradicted by numerous health policy experts as well as the American Medical Association.’

Politifact: “This makes protection for people with pre-existing conditions sound ironclad. But that’s not the case. People with pre-existing conditions could get coverage, but they could be charged higher rates.”

Politico’s Dan Diamond: “Trump appears to reverse himself on pre-existing conditions 2x in 2 mins—first by saying it's guaranteed (it isn't), then kicking to states.”

Washington Post: “President Trump tried Sunday to reassure anxious Republicans that the latest proposal to replace the Affordable Care Act would continue to protect those with preexisting medical conditions, although he struggled to fully articulate what form those protections would take.”

The Guardian: “Trump's promise for healthcare act contradicts Republicans' proposal” “It is not clear how many states would follow through on the power to make the sick pay more. Critics, however, have said any such change could make insurance prohibitively expensive for those with preexisting conditions.”

The Week: “He seemed to guarantee that the bill would protect people with pre-existing conditions. The American Medical Association and outside health policy analysts mostly disagree with this assertion.”

Huffington Post: “Republicans claim that other provisions of their bill, designed to reimburse insurers for expensive beneficiaries or to create separate programs for people with pre-existing conditions, would take care of people with serious medical problems. ‘They say we don’t cover pre-existing conditions, we cover it beautifully,’ Trump said on ‘Face the Nation.’ As multiple analysts have pointed out, these programs have never provided adequate protection in the past, even though Republican leaders like Ryan keep claiming otherwise.”

Star-Ledger: “3.8 million Garden State residents with pre-existing conditions could lose their ability to get adequate coverage. That's on top of the 500,000 fewer state residents who would have insurance under the GOP alternative.”

Why Conservative Politicians Can Never Guarantee Affordable Health Care PDF Print E-mail

duffy-stallingRep. Duffy outburst reveals fear of government control overrides public good.

ANTIGO, WI - In an emotional outburst at a town hall meeting yesterday in Antigo, Congressman Sean Duffy said much more than he intended about why conservative politicians who control the House of Representatives are reneging on their campaign promise to make health coverage more affordable and accessible.

At the town hall meeting, which was dominated by questions about the unsuccessful attempt to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act (ACA), Dora Gorski asked Duffy to support a single payer health care system to reduce costs and to guarantee health coverage to every American.

As was reported by Wisconsin Public Radio, Duffy responded with an emotional harangue:

"I would argue, 'Hell no,' to that. When the government controls your education, they control your food, they control your housing, they control your health care, they control you."

Audio of the exchange here.

Citizen Action of Wisconsin Executive Director Robert Kraig made the following statement in response:

robert-kraig“Congressman Duffy’s outburst unintentionally reveals a dangerously constricted view of government that if fulfilled would eliminate Medicare and BadgerCare, which are single payer systems, and would abolish public schools. By stating this anti-government extremism plainly, Duffy has actually helped explain why the conservative majority in the House of Representatives delivered a health care bill which forces 24 million people off health care and legalizes discrimination against people with pre-existing conditions. The modern conservative drive to radically limit the role of our democracy is incompatible with guaranteeing that everyone in America has somewhere to go to get health care no matter what. Insurance and pharmaceutical corporations are not in the business of securing affordable health care, they are driven by profit imperatives dictated by Wall Street. That’s why insurance companies will deny coverage to sick people and pharmaceutical corporations will price gouge if we let them. It is a simple truth that only “we the people, through the agency of our own democratic government, can guarantee health care to everyone in America.”
