guncontrol-protestIt is time to take proactive action to protect our children, our families, and our community says Madison legislator.

MADISON, WI- Today, Representative Shelia Stubbs (D-Madison) joined with Senator LaTonya Johnson (D-Milwaukee) and Attorney General Josh Kaul in introducing legislation to expand universal background checks in the state of Wisconsin.

On this legislation, Rep.Stubbs released the following statement:

shelia-stubbs“Mandating universal background checks will keep firearms out of the hands of dangerous individuals, making our community safer for everyone. Universal background checks are a popular and meaningful safeguard for our community. Marquette University Law School found that 81% of Wisconsin residents support background checks – including 78% of gun owning households.

“As a leader of faith, I see the impact of these tragedies first hand. I see the holes left in families that can never be filled. I see the pain that this senseless violence creates. Incident after incident I see my community mourn, as another life is suddenly ended. Taking proactive action to protect our community is our duty and I am proud to lead on this legislation. We must continue the fight for a better tomorrow.”

On September 6th 2021, 63 year old David L. Neeley was shot in Penn Park, which is located in my district. On September 19th 2021, he tragically passed away. This is Madison’s 8th homicide since April 3rd. These shootings are impacting our parks, our gas stations, and our sidewalks. My community is not only dodging COVID, we are dodging bullets. We are facing a rise in violence in a time when people are most vulnerable.”

“Gun violence is senseless and preventable. It is time to take proactive action to protect our children, our families, and our community. Inaction is unacceptable. It is our duty to create a community that protects our children, and allows them to grow and flourish. We must stop playing politics, and do what is right.”
