road-local-wiMADISON – Today Rep. Dana Wachs (D-Eau Claire) offered the Democratic Weekly Radio Address on the state of our roads:

dana_wachs"Our roads, once the best in the Midwest, are crumbling because Governor Walker and the Republicans in the Legislature refuse to fund this vital infrastructure," Rep. Wachs said. "As we rebuild our economy, solid infrastructure is critical to supporting jobs and commerce. Wisconsin depends on good roads for manufacturing, agriculture and tourism—this is a problem we cannot ignore."

“Hi, I’m Representative Dana Wachs with this week’s Democratic Weekly Radio Address.

"You see it, and feel it, every time you drive in a car – Wisconsin roads are in bad shape. Our roads, once the best in the Midwest, are crumbling because Governor Walker and the Republicans in the Legislature refuse to fund this vital infrastructure.

"Last week, the Legislative Audit Bureau found that the percentage of state highways in good condition decreased from 53.5 percent in 2010 to 41 percent in 2015. The percentage of state highways in poor or worse condition climbed from seven percent in 2010 to 17.5 percent in 2015. This is simply unacceptable.

"Rough roads cost drivers money in repairs, new tires, and additional maintenance. And as everyone knows, these repairs always seem to come at the worst times, especially for families struggling to get by. Rough roads also leave drivers more susceptible to accidents and in some cases can lead drivers to pay the ultimate price-death.

"As we rebuild our economy, solid infrastructure is critical to supporting jobs and commerce. Wisconsin depends on good roads for manufacturing, agriculture and tourism—this is a problem we cannot ignore.

"We need to find a long-term solution to fund our roads, one that does not fall on the shoulders of middle class families. As the audit shows, what we’ve been doing just isn’t working."
