janet-bewleyMADISON - Today, Senator Janet Bewley offered the following Democratic Weekly Radio address commemorating the National Park Service's 100th Birthday.

"All the natural beauty in the state makes it easy to take our National Parks for granted.  The 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service is an opportunity to take a minute and think about how lucky we are to have our National Parks, how lucky we are for all the people who joined in the effort to preserve these natural resources." - Sen. Janet Bewley

A written transcript of the address is below:

"An idea that has truly stood the test of time is celebrating its 100th birthday this year.  On August 25, 1916 President Woodrow Wilson created the National Park Service, assuring access to protected national treasures for generations to come.

"Writer and historian Wallace Stegner called national parks "the best idea we ever had. Absolutely American, absolutely democratic, they reflect us at our best rather than our worst."  In 1916, the Park Service oversaw the 35 national parks and monuments.  Today, the National Park System of the United States includes more than 400 areas covering more than 84 million acres.

"In Wisconsin we are blessed to have the Apostle Island National Lakeshore, the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, tributaries and portions of the St. Croix National Scenic Riverway and a vital leg of the North Country Scenic Trail.

"All the natural beauty in the state makes it easy to take our National Parks for granted.  The 100th Anniversary of the National Park Service is an opportunity to take a minute and think about how lucky we are to have our National Parks, how lucky we are for all the people who joined in the effort to preserve these natural resources.  Join me in saluting a century-old service protecting and preserving these national treasures for future generations."
