assemblyState legislators in Madison join call for Senator Ron Johnson to do his Constitutional duty and have an up-or-down vote on the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to serve as a United States Supreme Court Justice.

MADISON – On Wednesday, Representative Cory Mason (D-Racine) and 35 other Wisconsin legislators sent a letter to Senator Ron Johnson calling for a fair hearing and an up-or-down vote on the nomination of Judge Merrick Garland to serve as a United States Supreme Court Justice.

cory-mason“With 19 years of experience on D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals, including three as Chief Judge, Judge Merrick Garland is the one of the most experienced jurists in history to be nominated to the Supreme Court,” said Rep. Mason.

In addition to his extensive experience as a judge, Judge Garland served as Deputy Assistant Attorney General and successfully prosecuted Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh, bringing one of the worst domestic terrorists in American history to justice.

Republican Senator Orrin Hatch praised Judge Garland as an eminently qualified “consensus nominee” for the Supreme Court, and Chief Justice John Roberts also lauds Judge Garland for his thoughtful opinions as a jurist. Yet Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell refuses to even hold a hearing on Judge Garland’s nomination, which deprives the American people of a functioning Supreme Court.

“While I am pleased that Senator Johnson has agreed to meet with Judge Merrick Garland, this is only a first step. There can be no doubt that Judge Merrick garland has outstanding qualifications to serve on the Supreme Court. Any attempt to block his confirmation is purely for the purpose of partisan politics, not the pursuit of justice. Senator Johnson should do his job and urge Senator McConnell to hold hearings and an up-or-down vote on Judge Merrick Garland without delay,” concluded Rep. Mason.
