MADISON - State Senator Dave Hansen (D-Green Bay) announced today that he is introducing a Senate resolution honoring the UWGB Phoenix Men’s basketball team on their return to the NCAA tournament.

dave-hansen-gb“The teamwork and confidence these young men have displayed throughout the season to win the Horizon League Championship and earn a berth in the tournament are amazing,” said Hansen who is a UWGB alum who regularly attends home games for both the men’s and women’s teams. “They are a very fun team to watch and I think their style of play makes them dangerous heading into the tournament.”

“For Coach Darner to achieve this level of success in his first year coaching in Division 1 not only says a great deal about his knowledge of the game, but of his passion for this team,” Hansen said.

Wording of Resolution Honoring the UW-Green Bay Men’s Basketball Team

Whereas, the UW-Green Bay men's basketball team defeated Wright State 78-69 for the Horizon League tournament championship; and

Whereas, the Phoenix also upset top-seeded Valparaiso during its first run to the NCAA Tournament since 1996; and

Whereas, the Phoenix defense has generated 344 steals this season, which is tops in the nation and they led the Horizon League with an average of 10 steals per game; and

Whereas, the Phoenix offense had four players average in double-figures in conference play, led by senior guard Carrington Love at 17.8 points per game and finished second in scoring offense by averaging 84.0 points per game; and

Whereas, senior Carrington Love was named to the All-Horizon League First Team, senior Jordan Fouse was awarded Second Team honors, and both players were also named to the All-Defensive Team, with Fouse becoming just the second player in conference history to be selected to the Horizon League All-Defensive team four-consecutive years; and

Whereas, a team picked to finish sixth in the Horizon League has more than exceeded expectations under new head coach Linc Darner by finishing fourth in conference play by posting an impressive 11-3 mark at the Resch Center and surpassing the 20-win mark for the third-straight season; and

Whereas, Coach Darner told his players during their first meeting last April that they would make it to the NCAA Tournament this season and they responded by earning a spot for the fifth time in program history; now, therefore, be it further

Resolved by the senate, That the members of the Wisconsin Senate hereby commend and congratulate the UW-Green Bay Men’s Basketball Team on a successful regular season and wishes them the best of luck in the NCAA tournament; and be it further Resolved, That the senate chief clerk shall provide copies of this joint resolution to Head Coach Linc Darner, his staff, each member of the team, and Athletic Director Mary Ellen Gillespie.
