sunflowerGREEN BAY - Share Your Gardening Wisdom, Green Bay Garden Blitz Looking for Mentors

The Green Bay Garden Blitz will be holding its Mentorship Program Interest Meetings for people who have signed up to be mentors for new gardeners and those interested in learning more about the program. The meetings will be held at the UW Extension office, 1150 Bellevue St, Green Bay 54302, on the following dates:

Tuesday, March 31, 6 p.m. – 7 p.m.

Thursday, April 2, 10 a.m. – 11 a.m.

During the meetings, Margaret Franchino, mentor coordinator for the Blitz will provide information about the mentorship program, review the mentorship packet, and answer questions from with interested mentors. Mentors can choose which date works better for their schedules. Attending the meeting is not required to become a mentor, but is highly encouraged. At the same time, you can come to find out more about the mentoring program without committing to becoming a mentor.

The Green Bay Garden Blitz’s mentorship program helps ensure new gardeners are successful gardeners. We pair experienced gardeners with new gardeners, and each pair meets five times during the season. Mentors visit the gardens of their mentee partners and share advice on vegetable gardening, including selecting crops, maintaining a garden, pest control, and harvesting.

“The mentorship program really helps new gardeners get their gardens off to a great start,” said Ms. Franchino. “They have someone they can go to with questions who knows what it takes to have a successful garden. What’s great is that these gardeners can share the trials and tribulations that come from gardening in the Green Bay area. If it’s a wet year, for example, both the mentor and the mentee will be dealing with it. Plus, it often happens that mentors learn from their mentees, too. It’s been a great experience for everyone involved.”
