MADISON – Thursday, Senate Democratic Leader Melissa Agard (D-Madison) visited with Minnesota legislators and stakeholders to discuss cannabis legalization, both their recent successes and her ongoing efforts in Wisconsin. Senator Agard released the following statement:

melissa-agard“Visiting with neighboring legislators who led the charge to legalize cannabis in Minnesota was invigorating. We know that the Midwest is ready to legalize it, and I applaud Minnesota’s state government for taking the calls from their constituents seriously.

“In Wisconsin, despite 69% of voters supporting legalization for responsible adult use, the Republican-led State Legislature has refused to even give cannabis legalization legislation a public hearing. We must stop ignoring the will of the majority and start opening our state up to increased opportunity and safety.

“Over the summer, Minnesota became the 23rd state to legalize cannabis. We are falling behind our neighbors and are quite literally an island of prohibition. People are spending their hard earned dollars out of state - these are dollars that should be invested in Wisconsin businesses, Wisconsin main streets, Wisconsin schools, Wisconsin roads, and Wisconsin communities.”
