rydercup-2021Proclaims “Ryder Cup Days” Across the State

MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today welcomed the Ryder Cup to Wisconsin for what is the 43rd edition of the biennial golf tournament. Every two years, the Ryder Cup brings together 24 of the world best golfers from across the Unites States and Europe to compete in what has become one of the world’s largest and most prestigious international sporting events. Wisconsin will be hosting the Ryder Cup for the first time at the Whistling Straights golf course in Sheboygan.

Anticipated to draw in tens of thousands of guests to the area, Gov. Evers proclaimed Sept. 21 through Sept. 26 as “Ryder Cup Days” to welcome guests as they arrive throughout the week. A copy of the governor’s “Ryder Cup Days” proclamation is available here and is on display this week at Whistling Straits.

Also on display at this year’s Ryder Cup, in a collaboration between Gov. Evers and the Wisconsin Historical Society, is the cast iron eagle sculpture that once sat atop the flagpole above the Wisconsin State Capitol. This sculpture has played a significant role in Wisconsin state history, having survived the 1904 fire that destroyed much of the State Capitol building. While atop the Capitol, the eagle served as a guardian to the United States and Wisconsin flags and as an inspiration to those on the streets down below. Now, the eagle greets visitors at the Wisconsin Historical Society, symbolizing courage, strength, and victory. The governor hopes that the eagle will encourage team U.S.A. to work hard, aim high, and take home a Ryder Cup victory.

The governor was joined by Wisconsin Department of Tourism Secretary-designee Anne Sayers and Wisconsin Economic Development Corporation (WEDC) Secretary-designee and CEO Missy Hughes for a video message to welcome guests and viewers to Wisconsin. In the video, Gov. Evers, Secretary-designee Sayers, and Secretary-designee and CEO Hughes highlight all that Wisconsin has to offer attendees visiting the state and share their excitement to see Wisconsin showcased on a global scale. The video message can be viewed here.
