scott_fitzgeraldMADISON - Yesterday, Senator Scott Fitzgerald introduced a bill to specifically bar county executives from serving simultaneously in the Legislature. The bill comes as Winnebago County Executive Mark Harris, a Democrat, is running for Republican Sen. Mark Gudex's open Senate seat in the 18th Senate District.

Bill author, Senator Scott Fitzgerald, had nothing to say in the past when his colleagues held a county executive post at the same they served in the Legislature. Fitzgerald stayed silent when fellow Republican Paul Farrow held his Senate seat and ran Waukesha County executive. Furthermore, former Rep. Bob Ziegelbauer served in both the legislature and as the Manitowoc County executive for nearly six years, between 2006 and 2012.

mark-harrisNow that the Republicans' weak hold on the state Senate is in jeopardy, Senator Fitzgerald is trying to pass legislation to single out a specific Democratic candidate running in a vulnerable Republican district.

This attempt to disqualify a candidate for office speaks to a desperate fear of facing the voters. In six years, we've seen Republican's try to repeal open records laws, shield themselves from John Doe investigations, disenfranchise voters, and rig campaign finance laws in their favor.

"It's clear Republicans in Wisconsin are afraid to defend their failed record on a level playing field." Democratic Party of Wisconsin Executive Director Kory Kozloski said on Tuesday. "Sen. Fitzgerald and Republicans are so scared of facing the voters they've introduced a proposal to single out a Democratic candidate running in a vulnerable Republican district. Their corruption appears to know no bounds"
